« The world is so murderous only because it is in the hands of people who have begun by killing themselves, by strangling within themselves all instinctive confidence, all freedom given from self to self. I am always astonished to see how little freedom each person allows himself, this way of sticking his breath to the window of conventions, and the fog that this gives, the prevention of living, of loving. »
– Christian Bobin

Evoking death to illuminate life
Because it is most often associated with suffering or fear, death is a subject that we avoid, whether by modesty, fear or denial.
Yet it is the only certainty about our existence: it will end in death, sooner or later.
For Matthieu Ricard, it is not a sinister thought to know that death is certain and that its time is uncertain, but a way of living in accordance with reality.
Far from lamenting our finitude, thinking about death can also be a gratifying and inspiring way to celebrate life, through all its ephemeral manifestations, as in each passing moment.
Evoking death then also becomes an opportunity to become more aware of our interdependence, our common humanity and our connection with all sentient beings. It is an opportunity to cultivate benevolence towards ourselves and others, not to over-impose our mental constructs, our artificial labels on life and the world around us.
To speak of death, to name it, is already to recognize it as an integral part of life.
And to accept it is perhaps to free oneself from it in order to live fully in the present moment. Through the prism of their scientific, philosophical, artistic and simply human perspectives, the guests of this 2021 edition of the Emergences Days will therefore evoke death to better inspire life.
